The end of All the Gallant men starts sad when someone is trying to find a dead family member. Then it ends on a touching note when it says
“To the eternal memory Or our gallant shipmates In the USS Arizona Who gave their lives in action 7 December 1941 May God Make his face To shine upon them And grant them peace” (Donald Stratton 265). This book matters because it is an autobiography by an American Hero (Donald Stratton) who after being burned (when the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor) went back into action. While doing this he describes the patriotism he saw. While you might not have heard of him this epic story depicted Pearl Harbor and the battles in the Pacific Theatre. He still is a hero because of the courage that he showed. One thing that you should take away from this book is that no matter the soldier they will always fight gallantly.

To answer it quickly yes December 7th had a major effect on history.
A way it has affected us is it impacted our relationship with Russia and started the Cold War. While this might be obvious at first, it is pretty simple to explain. The attack on Pearl Harbor got the United States into World War II. At the end of World War II Germany's government was divided among the Allied Powers to help rebuild it into a global power. There were some arguments about how Germany was going to be governed but eventually, two distinct themes were there Communist countries wanted Germany to be communist and the Capitalist countries wanted Germany to be capitalist, and because there were more Capitalist countries on the Allied Powers the German Government was mostly Capitalist. Except for a part of Germany that Russia was sent to help form a government. This continued on and on, with the United States fighting the spread of Communism, In places like Vietnam, Korea and Cuba. All of these are linked into one category, The Cold War. Which we are still feeling the effects today. With economic sanctions on Russia and people hating Russia. "All Gallant Men" is a memoir written by Donald Stratton about Pearl Harbor. I know that this is historically accurate because this is a memoir he was actually their and because of quotes like "I observed the Tennessee and the West Virginia take hits. I witnessed the Oklahoma lurch to one side, then roll over and capsize. I saw a fireball in the drydock where the Pennsylvania was." This book takes place in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. It takes places right after the great depression and it illustrates a perfect view of what it was like living under the great depression and what it was like experiencing one of the greatest tragedies on US soil. While he was a soldier he didn't have much of a point of view on the war. He and many others were just their so they would get money to support their family, "Truth be told, most of us had enlisted because there were precious few jobs to be found."(Donald Stratton).

| https://aylaenszscience.files.wordpress.com/2014/05/33264-sealsall4.jpg Intro Pollution is a big problem in North Carolina. Just in 2015 the North Carolina government spent 7.5 million dollars to pick up 3750 tons of roadside litter. This is an issue because it not only hurts our environment which we rely on but it also increases crime rates. We are interested in this issue because we do not want our community to do well. We should all care for this because pollution increases crime crate, causes respiratory illness, cancers, and decreases water quality. According to the NCDPS, Clean streets and a clean neighborhood send a signal that people care about where they live and work, and indicates they don't have any tolerance for disobedience or criminal activity. When someone litters, others think it is ok and soon more litter accumulates. Before you know it, you or your community is covered in trash. (NC DPS 2016). Eventually, if we do nothing litter will accumulate exponentially and this will make North Carolina an unlivable place Body The issue is only getting worse. In 2013 299 million tons of a plastic was produced. Which is a four percent increase from 2012. This might not seem that bad however, there was a 126% increase in plastic litter (Lytle 2017). This problem is extremely serious because it causes health problems for not only animals and plants but also humans. The increase in diseases caused by litter can in often cases cause death. For example over 100,000 marine mammals are killed, of those 30,000 are seals or turtles alone(Headifen 2012). Also, we are making 200 billion water bottles are made every year. Another reason animals are dying is because we use 10 million plastic bags a minute and a trillion a year (Headifen 2012). Even though a lot of people recycle only 14% of the plastic bags used are recycled. Solution While most people clean up, there are some who don’t. Those who want to stop the people who litter pass laws against littering. Which is a good start but there’s no real way to see if someone actually litters. The only chance Janis if a police car is behind a person who has littered, and if that unlikely situation happens the person who is going to litter they won’t because they see the police. Also they have done park clean ups. That’s what others have done but there are a couple ways for you to help. For example you could write to a senator, mayor or governor. Another thing you can do is pick up any litter seen or go with a group to clean up parks and/or public areas. One final but simple thing you can do is throughout your trash instead of leaving it because if you leave it then some animal might eat it, and the animal will probably die leaving the plastic inside its body. “We can change the world and make it a better place. It’s in your hands to make a difference” - (Nelson Mandela). Conclusion I propose that we go to Laurel Hills park and pick up the trash. Which is going to a park and picking up any litter seen. This would help children see the amount of litter in parks. Also, it would benefit the parks by removing the litter. Another reason that doing a park cleanup would be good is you won’t have to pay that much money, if you want to go it’s free (After you fill out the application sheet )to enter and if you want an outdoor seating area its 12 dollars an hour. The main goal of this is to prevent animals in the Laurel Hills Park from dying from plastic litter. Also a goal is to expose kids to the outdoors and show them that they can help. A final goal to this is to give children exercise. Works Cited Berg, Susan. “Negative Effects of Pollution.” Sciencing. April 24th, 2017. January 2017. January 24th, 2018 <http://plastic-pollution.org/> Near Duke Energy (In North Carolina) people are scared to drink the water. While this might seem irrational it isn't because they are near Duke Energy and if you didn't know they have dumped over 61 million gallons of coal. Which caused duke to have to pay 102 Million dollar fines. This not only has affected wildlife but it has affected people by making them only get water from water bottles. While this is a short term fix and needs a long term fix it could be too late. People there have went 1,000 days without tap water. You might know why you should care, a reason you should care is the people in these areas are drinking from plastic water bottles which can lead to obesity and diabetes. The reason I care is that if we can successfully take care of this problem then we could wipe out water pollution as a whole. Now you might be wondering why hasn't this problem been fixed well, those who are supposed to deal with problem (Republicans and Democrats)are blaming one another saying it’s their responsibilities. The only way this problem can be fixed is if the people that started this takes responsibility and help clean it up. If it’s making a new law or taking tests on the drinking water near Duke Energy it will at least be going in the right direction. If you are not one of those people who blame each other than you could write your government official who is in charge of this. Another option is to try and pick up any litter near the area near Duke Energy because not all of the pollution is caused by Duke Energy and if you really want people to feel safe about their drinking water then people will have to pick up most of the trash near where the people near Duke Energy get their tap water.

Before I get into the details I would like to introduce myself. I’m an 8th grader at Martin middle. Like any Student I dislike homework, it robs you of your free time. Also, if you don’t get a topic you will have to review it, which gives you an extra say half an hour of homework. For example I have a sister who stays up till 2 am doing homework. This causes her to not go out and be with her friends like she wants to do. This also causes my family and I to not go out anywhere she would want to go. Finally this causes me to not see my sister for more than five minutes which causes most of our encounters to be arguments. Another example of why homework should not be assigned is I had a project in an elective I had to turn in late because of an abundance of homework. Also, one year I had pneumonia and missed nearly a month's work of classwork and homework. I needed to finish all that work before the quarter ended which turned out to be two weeks. While this might not sound difficult I am going to point out that I had to do four classes of homework for a month without knowing how to do it. This caused me to almost failed the class because of an illness. In case you didn’t know pneumonia is a disease in the lungs cause coughing up blood, accelerated heart beat, quick breathing and nausea . While homework can be used to see if you know a topic it can cause tiredness which will negatively affect your grades, this will also cause students to break a couple rules, like sleeping in class which will result in a punishment. These examples are why students shouldn’t have homework. |
